Who Are We?

The Church of the Nazarene is a Holiness denomination within the Wesleyan (Methodist) tradition of Protestantism. We share most beliefs with the rest of our Protestant brothers and sisters, but we have a few distinctives that are important to us.

Christian

We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who became a human being. This incarnation established a covenantal relationship between God and humanity (like a marriage), and this covenant is what empowers us to live the kind of lives God intended for us. By his life, Jesus demonstrated what a life of self-giving love devoted to God and others looks like. By his death and resurrection, he decisively dealt with anything that would prevent us from living that kind of life.

Holiness

We believe that followers of Christ should live lives that reflect the God in whose image all of humanity was created. While living within the boundary lines God draws for human flourishing is important, we don't see holiness primarily as "rule-keeping." We believe God's deepest desire for humanity is that they love God and love their neighbor, affirming with Paul that "Love is the fulfillment of the law" (Rom 13:10).

Missional

We believe that the message about Jesus's life, death, and resurrection--and the empowerment to live holy lives that results from that--is good news worth telling everyone about. Around the block and around the world, we want to share this good news with people and live a life that demonstrates its truth.
